Is a Phone Repair Course Worth It? 7 Things to Check Before You Book

2 min read

Thinking about learning phone repair but not sure whether a course is worth the money? It is a fair question. Courses vary a lot in quality, and the right one depends on where you are starting from and what you want to do afterwards. Here are seven things to check before you book anything, whoever you train with.

1. Will you work on real devices?

Watching a trainer is not the same as doing the repair yourself. Look for a course where most of the time is hands-on, with real phones, tablets or laptops in front of you from the first day. At London School of Mobile Technology, every course is around 80% practical.

2. How big is the group?

In a large class you wait for help and learn less. Smaller groups mean you can ask questions the moment you get stuck. Ask how many students there will be and how many trainers.

3. Does it match your level?

A complete beginner and an experienced technician need different things. Beginners need the foundations: opening devices safely, screens, batteries, charging ports and fault diagnosis. Technicians who already repair phones usually want board-level work such as micro-soldering, which is where the harder and better-paid jobs are.

4. What happens after the course ends?

Repair problems do not stop on the last day. Ask whether you can contact the trainers afterwards, and whether extra practice sessions are available if you need them. Good support after training often matters more than the course itself.

5. Will you get a certificate?

A recognised certificate helps when you apply for a job or show customers you are qualified. Check what the certificate is called and what it covers.

6. What can you realistically earn?

Be careful with big income promises. Employed repair technicians in the UK are often paid modestly at the start, and published salary data for the trade is thin. The bigger opportunity usually comes from building skills that other shops cannot offer, such as motherboard and micro-soldering repairs, or from running your own repair business. Ask any training provider what their former students actually went on to do, and ask to see real examples.

7. Can you spread the cost?

Training is an investment. At LSMT you can secure a place and pay in instalments with Klarna, so you do not need the full amount at once. Always ask about payment options before you commit.
